Pa was a good carpenter, and it turned out Jack was, too. They took time to cut out two windows and cover them tight with canvas. You couldn't see out, but some light came in. They built a lean-to where we could store tools and grub and have more room inside. Ed said she wanted a sleeping loft for herself, being the only female, and, of course, they done that. Then Jack and Pa made another loft on the other side and said it was for me. If they'd asked, I would've said, No, I don't want nothing special from you, but since it was a done thing, I hauled my stuff up there quick enough.

As soon as we'd quit work for the day, I'd get close to the fire or lantern or whatever light there was and stick my nose in one of my books, hardly stopping long enough to eat supper. The pirate book was all right, but those stories thinned out after a while and I spent most of my time with the other book. It was about a boy named David Copperfield. He had more hard luck even than I did. His mother had died, too, but he had a stepfather who treated him mean and made him work in a bottle factory. I had read the story before, but it had more meaning for me now. So that's how I made it through those first days without Persey, and after a while, I got used to being lonely.
